Nonprofit Sector Data

Discover where your nonprofit fits into Alberta’s bigger picture—and where new opportunities for collaboration may be waiting.

In the past, it has been difficult to get a clear picture of the size, scope, and diversity of Alberta’s nonprofit sector. Responding to feedback from the sector, the Government of Alberta developed the Nonprofit Listing Dashboard, which brings together data on the number of nonprofits across the province, their years of registration, status, and location by electoral district and community size—with elegant mapping capabilities.

At the same time, the Nonprofit Chamber worked with consultants to organize a list of Alberta nonprofits by subcategory, ultimately aligning them with the International Classification of Nonprofit Organizations.

The Government of Alberta worked with us to merge this subcategory data with the provincial nonprofit listing, enabling us to identify what kind of work - and how much of it - is being performed across the province. The following dashboard is the result.

Our goal is to demonstrate the art of the possible. For individual nonprofits, this dashboard could be a powerful tool to show where your work connects with others nearby and across the province, and highlight where communities may need more support.

At a higher level, better data can help our sector more effectively demonstrate impact, identify gaps, and guide conversations on funding, workforce development, and policy priorities.

This dashboard is a work in progress. We'll continue to classify nonprofits currently listed as “Blank” (this work takes time!). We also invite you to search for your organization in the listing and contact us if you would like to update your subcategory.

We extend our warm thanks to the Government of Alberta for making this project possible and for recognizing the importance of data in strengthening Alberta’s nonprofit sector.
